scrappiebaby Store                 ABP BRILLIANT VASE - Sinclaire "Rock Crystal Spray" a.imagelink {color:#333333;} a:hover.imagelink {color:#333333;} a:visited.imagelink {color:#666666;} a.imagelink img.auctionimage { border: 2px solid #333333; } a:visited.imagelink img.auctionimage { border: 2px solid #666666; } DescriptionAmerican Brilliant engraved and polished glass vase (Sinclaire’s "Rock Crystal Spray").  This blown-glass trumpet vase is stunning in its execution.  The blank is water clear (and probably from Dorflinger), the cutting outstanding.  There are several large flowers with a spray of foliage and buds (seeds?) as well.  The overall effect is that the piece is made of ice and is melting before your eyes!  A truly amazing, watery, glistening piece.  Sinclaire was in operation from 1904 – 1920.  The base has a concave center (see photo) where the pontil was ground out, indicating that the piece was blown and not pressed.  This detail hardly needs to be noted really, since the clarity of the blank itself is a textbook example of “blown.”  Add to that the Dorflinger quality, and you've got an exceptional piece.Size: 6 ¼” tall; 4” across at top; 3 ¼” across at base.  Condition: Excellent.  There is a very minor amount of surface wear to the bottom where the vase sits on the table (and exactly where you’d expect it – you may not even be able to see it in the photos), and a couple of “bump” marks.  These aren’t scratches or fleabites, just a couple of places where the glass has rubbed up against something else (another glass, perhaps?) and created a slight opaque squiggle on the surface.  Nothing of import, but I mention it only for accuracy.  That’s it – no cracks, chips, fleabites, scratches.  Signature: No signature, however, an example of Sinclaire’s “Rock Crystal Spray” (from Martha Louise Swan's AMERICAN CUT AND ENGRAVED GLASS) contains many of the identical elements as seen in this vase, as well another unsigned Sinclaire piece.  (Red arrows indicate identical pattern motifs.  This photo is from a 1917 reprint of Sinclaire’s inventory.) ROCK CRYSTAL:  According to Sinclaire & Spillman’s THE COMPLETE CUT & ENGRAVED GLASS OF CORNING, “…by 1917 the term ‘rock crystal’ was describing any engraving in the polished finish.”  That describes this perfectly: an engraved and polished work.  For more info regarding H.P. Sinclaire's work, see the above-mentioned book.  Blacklight:  Glows yellow-green under a blacklight.  (C.f.  http://www.cutglass.org/articles/art21.htm for more information.)Blank:  The blank is lustrous, water clear, and an utter delight (see photos).    Sinclaire’s free-blown blanks were chiefly supplied by Dorflinter from 1904 – 1920.  (Their thick blanks were supplied by Corning, Pairpoint, as well as Baccarat, Webb, Steuben, Libbey, Westmoreland, Duncan & Miller.)  Shipping: I prefer shipping UPS because of the unpredictable nature of the Chicago Post Office, which was rated the worst service in the country.  Since insurance is required with glass purchases (and is included in UPS fees), the difference in price between USPS and UPS is negligible, and UPS is much more reliable.  I will ship using USPS if you absolutely insist, but I will do it reluctantly.  I also do not charge any fees for handling. Please check and see if I’m selling other items: I’ll gladly combine purchases to save on shipping.                 /* Colors */ #wrapper { background: #000; } #wrapper .acttbl, #wrapper .section, #wrapper .section_desc, #wrapper .section p { color: #fffaea; } #wrapper #title, #wrapper .section h2, #wrapper .section_desc h2, #content a { color: #8E5B18; } /* -- */ #wrapper { padding: 0 50px; width: 100%; } #mainTable { margin: 50px auto; width: 830px; } #wrapper .acttbl, #wrapper .section, #wrapper .section_desc, #wrapper .section p, #wrapper h1, #wrapper h2 { font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif; } #tileLeft, #content_tileLeft, #footer_tileLeft { background: url("http://ti2.auctiva.com/ti/curlyonblackcopper/tileLeft.jpg") repeat-y; } #tileRight, #content_tileRight, #footer_tileRight { background: url("http://ti2.auctiva.com/ti/curlyonblackcopper/tileRight.jpg") right top repeat-y; } #tileCapLeft, #tileCapRight, #footer_tileCapLeft, #footer_tileCapRight { width: 50%; } #tileCapLeft { background: url("http://ti2.auctiva.com/ti/curlyonblackcopper/stretchLeft.jpg") repeat-x; } #tileCapRight { background: url("http://ti2.auctiva.com/ti/curlyonblackcopper/stretchRight.jpg") repeat-x; text-align: right; } #tileCapLeft div { background: url("http://ti2.auctiva.com/ti/curlyonblackcopper/wingLeft.jpg") right top no-repeat; } #tileCapRight div { background: url("http://ti2.auctiva.com/ti/curlyonblackcopper/wingRight.jpg") no-repeat; } #content_tileRight { padding: 2em 0; } #footer_tileCapLeft { background: url("http://ti2.auctiva.com/ti/curlyonblackcopper/footer_stretchLeft.jpg") left bottom repeat-x; } #footer_tileCapRight { background: url("http://ti2.auctiva.com/ti/curlyonblackcopper/footer_stretchRight.jpg") left bottom repeat-x; text-align: right; } #footer_tileCapLeft div { background: url("http://ti2.auctiva.com/ti/curlyonblackcopper/footer_wingLeft.jpg") right top no-repeat; } #footer_tileCapRight div { background: url("http://ti2.auctiva.com/ti/curlyonblackcopper/footer_wingRight.jpg") no-repeat; } #title { font-size: 30px; font-weight: normal; font-variant: small-caps; line-height: 1.2em; margin: 45px auto 0; text-align: center; width: 67%; } .section, .section_desc { margin: 30px auto; padding: 0; width: 500px; text-align: left; } .section h2, .section_desc h2 { font-size: 24px; font-weight: normal; text-align: center; } .section p { margin: 10px 2px; padding: 0; } .section_desc { display: block; margin: 10px auto 0; padding: 0; width: 496px; } #aucimgcaption .section_desc { display: inline; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: auto; text-align: center; } #mainTable div.images .section { border: none; /* If images are grouped as thumbnails */ } a img, a.imagelink img.auctionimage, #wrapper #mainTable a.imagelink img.auctionimage { border: none; } #wrapper #mainTable #content .slideshow .nav .prev { background-image: url("http://ti2.auctiva.com/ti/curlyonblackcopper/slideshow_prev.gif"); } #wrapper #mainTable #content .slideshow .nav .stop { background-image: url("http://ti2.auctiva.com/ti/curlyonblackcopper/slideshow_stop.gif"); } #wrapper #mainTable #content .slideshow .nav .play { background-image: url("http://ti2.auctiva.com/ti/curlyonblackcopper/slideshow_play.gif"); } #wrapper #mainTable #content .slideshow .nav .next { background-image: url("http://ti2.auctiva.com/ti/curlyonblackcopper/slideshow_next.gif"); } a:active, a:focus { outline: 0; } #wrapper, .acttbl, #content { text-align: center; } #tileCapLeft, #tileCapRight, #footer_tileCapLeft, #footer_tileCapRight { width: 33%; }
