This is #139/350. This Character Jug depicts a U.S. Army private from World War One.While the United States did not officially declare war on Germany until April 6, 1917, the handle lists the official starting and ending dates of the war -- beginning on July 28, 1914 when the Austro-Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia and ending with a ceasefire that came into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. The handle incorporates other symbolic icons of the war: The sinking of the R.M.S. Lusitania by a German submarine on May 7, 1915, the entrenching tool that was an invaluable piece of equipment, the gas mask on the back of the handle was a critical defense against poison gas -- one of the most feared and longest remembered horrors of the war. The jug is earthenware and stands approximately 7 inches tall. A truly beautiful piece of American history in perfect condition. Comes boxed with certificate of authenticity.
